Morales assumes command of Martin squadron

Middle River, MD. – Captain Joseph Morales is appointed and assumes command of the Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron during a ceremony on December 10, 2020.

Morales joined Martin squadron in March 2017.  He quickly worked on being certified as a mission pilot and a cadet orientation pilot.  He is the squadrons assistant communications officer and cyber education officer.  In 2018, Morales began to coach the squadron’s CyberPatriot teams. He was appointed as assistant Deputy Commander for Cadets in 2019.

Capt. Morales is originally from Colombia, South America. He has two children, both of whom are cadets in the squadron. He served in active duty with the Army’s 82d Airborne division as a light wheel vehicle mechanic.  He then joined the Maryland Army National Guard and became a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. During his time in the National Guard, he was a forward support team leader for an aeromedical evacuation company and served as company commander of an air traffic control company. He is now an attorney and represents clients in matters related to intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Lt. Col. Frank Jarosinski, Maryland Wing Group 2 Commander, performed the change of command ceremony virtually, allowing all members of the unit to watch while keeping the crowd to a minimum.

Morales assumed command from Capt. Phil Vogelgesang. Vogelgesang was the commander of the squadron since January 2017. He led the unit through the change to virtual meetings in 2020 and will move onto new roles at Maryland Wing HQ.

Nearly 1,500 CAP members serve in Maryland. Last year wing members flew 13 search and rescue missions. The wing was credited with four finds. Maryland Wing flew 32 missions for the State of Maryland. Members flew 2,245 hours in all mission categories. Volunteers contributed services estimated at $4.6 million.
