Maryland Wing supports Anne Arundel County in disaster response operations

September 11, 2021

September 11, 2021 – Granite, MD — Upon the request of Maryland’s Anne Arundel County Emergency Coordination officials, Civil Air Patrol’s Maryland Wing (MDWG) effectively executed a disaster response, damage assessment-oriented mission on September 2, 2021.  Operation planning and execution for this significant undertaking were in response to a tornado touching down in Annapolis, MD and Edgewater, MD the day prior.  The tornado tore down utility lines, damaged a local high school, and ripped the roof off several homes in its path.

“Nothing represents the effects of a disaster situation than timely images” quantified Colonel Wes LaPre, Maryland Wing Commander.

On its mission, a MDWG aircrew flew over the suspected path of the tornado capturing over 1,100 quality photos of the impacted areas.  A vital decision-making product was ultimately delivered to Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management for damage assessment and recovery operations.

Maryland Wing distinguishes this mission’s aircrew (Mission Pilot –Lt Col John Henderson, Airborne Photographer- Capt. Phil Vogelsang) for their rapid response to Anne Arundel County’s request and a executing a successful mission while assisting the citizens they serve.

More than 1,200 members serve in Civil Air Patrol’s Maryland Wing. Last year, wing members flew 13 actual search and rescue missions. Overall, the Maryland Wing flew 32 missions for the State of Maryland, flying 2,245 hours in all mission categories, and was credited with four finds. Volunteers contributed services estimated at $4.6 million. For information, contact the Maryland Wing at mdwg.cap.gov or follow the wing on Facebook.

Civil Air Patrol is the longtime auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a valued member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 single-engine aircraft and 1,994 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). It performs about 90% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 82 lives annually. CAP’s 60,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Operating as a nonprofit organization, CAP also plays a leading role in STEM/aerospace education, and its members serve as mentors to about 25,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
